About Our Church
The Stockton Buddhist Temple is a member of the Buddhist Churches of America (BCA) headquarters located in San Francisco, California. BCA is affiliated with Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji Ha, also known as Nishi Hongwanji.
The temple’s membership serves the central valley’s community found in the San Joaquin valley and presently serves outlying areas such as Cortez, Tracy, Modesto and Turlock.
The Stockton Sangha, as our Buddhist community is referred to, include members from the surrounding communities of Tracy, Linden, French Camp, Brentwood, Delta Islands, and Stockton.

About Jodo Shinshu
Jodo Shinshu is the teaching of Sakyamuni Buddha as it was handed down through the religious understanding of Shinran Shonin (1173-1262).
In Jodo Shinshu, the object of worship is Amida, the Buddha of Infinite Light and Life. The Primal Vow of Amida Buddha promises Universal Enlightenment for all beings. There is no other vow that has such sweeping power, promising hope and life's fulfillment to all. Amida's eternal activity of Wisdom and Compassion will never cease so long as beings are lost, suffering or wandering in a meaningless existence.

Stockton Bukkyo Taiko
Stockton Bukkyo Taiko is an affiliate organization of the Stockton Buddhist Temple. The group was founded in 1990 by Reverend David Matsumoto to help practice Buddhist teachings in a fun manner.
Cortez Buddhist Church
Our church oversees the satellite church in Cortez, California. This small farming community was one of the original locations where Japanese Americans settled in the 1900s.
Our Religious Observances
The church celebrates and observes many special events throughout the year.
Stockton Kendo Dojo
After many years, kendo has finally come to the San Joaquin valley. Our chief instructor is Court Tanouye Sensei.
